Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier, Sally Beauman

Seeing the film first may have taken away some from the mystery and narrative tension, but I found that du Maurier captured states of consciousness in a way I've never read before, just very small moments and perceptions of a character (the narrator) moving through the world and maturing. The story still retained its gothic atmosphere, and the uniqueness of keeping the narrator nameless, as well as the stunning, haunting ending and structure overall, can't be diminished in terms of impact.
